Review: Nana? More like No-No.
Last night Matt and I were hitting up a co-worker’s housewarming party in Park Slope. We were going to go to Brooklyn Fish Camp for some yummy lobster rolls, but the wait was too long and I was worried we’d show up to the party too late. Instead, we headed to Nana, a pan-Asian eatery a block away from the party. From the start, it looked promising. Nana has a funky interior, with...

Guest review: 'Wichcraft
My friend Kyle was kind enough to report back on his findings after eating lunch at ‘Wichcraft (of the Craft family brought to you by Top Chef’s Tom Colicchio). I ate lunch at ‘Wichcraft eons ago, but I’m happy to hear that it’s still a good midtown lunch option. ‘Wichcraft recently opened for dinner, fyi. Take it away, Kyle! Lunch in Midtown Manhattan is a...

Happy 4th!
Howdy readers. I haven’t posted in awhile due to massive life events, which include taking Level I of the Cerftified Financial Analysts exam, then moving from Manhattan back to Brooklyn (Prospect Heights!), then starting a new job in which I work 10+ hours a day. During this long 4th of July weekend I’m finally starting to feel a little settled. Mostly because the aroma of coffee...

Helloooo readers
Sorry for my extended absense. Over the last two weeks I’ve been inundated with school finals. The good news: I’m done, which means I’ll be back to blogging. The bad news: I’m packing for a trip to the Berkshires for the weekend, which means I may not be really back to blogging, like, today. So. Stay tuned for some updates on: What I’ve been cooking (yes! despite the...

Johnstontron Parental Eat-a-Thon coming your way!
Mom and Dad will be hitting NYC in about a month for my j-school graduation, which means I get to play one of my favorite games ever: which restaurants (the ones I normally can’t afford) should we visit? As you know, last time my parents were in town, we dined at Il Mulino and brunch mecca Norma’s. Of course, all of this obsessing over where to eat is not just because I’m...

Empanadas in the Times today
As you know, I’ve wanted to try making homemade empanadas since my Argentina trip. Although this story in today’s Times is about Chilean empanadas, it includes a few recipes, for empanada dough, meat empanadas and cheese and mushroom empanadas. I also found two recipes on Smitten Kitchen, for chicken and beef empanadas. Looks like I have an upcoming empanada project once school ends!

Recipe: Classic Coconut Macaroons

Sadness
Fried Dumpling, my favorite NYC dumpling joint, is now closed. I’m going to have to find a new favorite dumpling joint. The commenters on this Chowhound board recommend Prosperty Dumpling on Eldridge Street.

It's bahn mi week in New York
Those yummy Vietnamese sandwiches were featured both in the Times and New York Magazine this week. New York Mag only made a passing reference to my favorite, Hanco’s, mentioning that it recently opened a new shop it Park Slope. I once had the Catfish num pang, the Cambodian version of the bahn mi, at Kampuchea, so I’d be interested to try its offshoot, aptly named Num Pang.

Vote for your favorite New York City restaurants... →
Remember, you get a free Zagat sometime in the fall when the new edition comes out, and all you have to do is vote for one restaurant. It’s better than Christmas! Polls are open until May 17.

Revisions to the Johnstontron Top 10
I’m a big fan of lists, so I take the Johnstontron Top 10 very seriously. As I’ve read the food press and blogosphere over the last few months, I’ve started itching to try some restaurants not on the list that I composed at the beginning of the year. And there are some restaurants on my list that I’d be willing to defer to a status less urgent than Top 10. So I’ve...

Hi! I'm back!
And as opposed to inundating you with a lot of posts today about my Argentinian food adventures, each day this week I’ll attempt to bring you a story of the foods that I tried. I think I had a chance to sample a lot of the country’s culinary specialties, so allow me to introduce them to you from the eyes of a curious New Yorker. (If you are already an Argentinian food expert, please...

¡Adios!
I’m off to Buenos Aires for a week. Unfortunately, my internet access will be minimal, so you might not hear about my beef and Malbec adventures for another week. Until then, ¡buen provecho!

Another healthy recipe to try →
g00blar: johnstontron: And easy to boot. I just need to figure out where to find Thai bird chile. Yikes. This website gives the Thai bird the dreaded five-chile “extremely hot” rating. A couple of things: ‘round here they’re called ‘bird’s eye’ chilis, which may help you find them quicker they’re not *that* hot, especially because they’re quite small, so I wouldn’t worry Thanks, g00blar,...
